Nectar in a Sieve

Nectar in a Sieve is possibly one of my favorite books I’ve ever read! I’m so into it! It’s such a emotional story that will not let you stop reading no matter how hard you try! Being only 12 years old and forced into marriage, is a lot to handle; but getting married and moving 6 hours away from your mother can be devastating! Then to top it all off you move into a mudd made home! I don’t know how Rukumani survived. Back then it was super important to have your first child be a boy, and more bad luck came and brought Ira. I just find it all so horrible and it seemed like nothing could get worse. I personally wanted to almost cry when time goes by and the drought becomes immense and all the family begin to starve. Ira began to sell herself out on the street to unknown men just so that her little brother, whom she took care of as a son, could eat. Now we find out Nathan is close to death- what will Rukmani do? I could never have surivived living in so much pain!

Blog Self-Evaluation

I feel my best entry was “In the middle”. I especially likes this entry because I know I felt very into the book and very interested that day. Therefore I felt that I made a great connection with Mariane, which I think, made me have a stronger voice. My least favorite was “Being someone different”. I think I wrote too much about Mariane and how she was being forced to marry tartuffe and how she was feeling so many things at once, I got annoyed with myself. I thought Cynthia Javier’s blog was amazing! She did an  excellent job showing her emotion towards the book and why she was so into it! I also like Alisha Marley’s because she made hers fun and exciting which made us want to go and read her book right away! I learned that not everyone learns the same way and everyone has their own opinion on everything. Everyone is so different in the style they prefer to read, and that’s ok. Blogging was a fun way to communicate!

Ending Tartuffe!

This picture is the perfect picture of Madame Pernelle! At the end of the play Orgon himself catches Tartuffe flirting with his wife. His mother hears about it and yet she refuses to believe any of it! She still strongly believes that Tartuffe is a saint and that is it! It is sad how she does not believe her own son, yet her own son was forcing his own daughter to marry this man. Apparently Karma plays a major role in this play; what goes around truly does come back around! denial.jpg

Being someone different.

Tartuffe would in one word be described as a hypocrite obviously. The things he does are completely wrong which goes against any religion. He puts on a different face with different people, times, or places and that is not the way it should be. This picture reminded me of a female version of Tartuffe since she looks happy, when in reality… she is hurt and is suffering; in other words, she is not being herself, slightly like Tartuffe.

Polygamist & Mariane!

Orgon arrives with the marriage contract to Mariane. She desperately begs on her knees that he not force her to marry Tartuffe. She desperatly requests that she be left free to choose a husband for herself that she will actually have feelings for. Mariane is being basically forced to marry this horrible man! This situation is very similar to what is currently happening with the polygamist issue. All these young boys and girls, mainly girls, were forced to marry older people and expected to have children. It is a disgusting thought, and an even more sickening reality! It is incredibly wrong on so many levels to be forced to marry anyone! Mariane has no where to go and no one to run to; she feels alone and this is only what seems to be the begining of a terrible long-lasting experience!

In the Middle

“Tell him one doesn’t love by proxy;

Tell him you’ll marry for yourself, not him;

Since you’re the one for who, the thing is done.

You are the one, not he, the man must please;

If his Tartuffe has charmed him so, why let him

Just marry him himself- no one will hinder.”

This quote was said by Dorine as he was speaking to Mariane, one could probably even say he has yelling at her. Dorine is very upset with the fact that Mariane was not able to stand up for herself and tell her father she did not want to marry the hypocritic Tartuffe. Mariane is in an incredibly hard situation; she has to basically choose between her personal love life and her father’s decision or what could be known as, a favor. She would never even dare to disrespect her father, but this siuation could possibly change everything. Either decision she makes will effect someone in a hurtful way. She is squeezed in the middle!

Tartuffe makes a visit!

The main problem that occurs in this act and most of the scenes in act 3 is the fact that Mariane is being forced to marry Tartuffe. Orgon’s son Damis is enraged because he has just heard of his father’s plan to force poor harmless Mariane to marry the evil Tartuffe. He tells Dorine that he is determined to expose Tartuffe as a hypocritical scoundrel. Dorine asks Damis to calm down because she has already arranged for Orgon’s wife, Elmire, to talk with Tartuffe, and she furthermore believes that Tartuffe is very much distracted with Elmire’s charms. The hot-tempered Damis is determined to hear the conference, and when Dorine cannot get rid of him, she quickly hides him in the closet when she hears Tartuffe coming. Tartuffe enters the rude constantly making rude dispicable remarks. He told Dorine he did not even want to look at her until she covered herself with a handkerchief because her “Flesh was weak”. It is amazing how rude and cocky some people can be!

Relating a Flower with Tartuffe!

Seeing this flower reminded me of Orgon’s daugher Mariane. He is basically forcing her to faking love for Tartuffe which will eventually lead to marriage. It may seem at first beautiful and strong, but sooner or later just like a flower, it will die and lead to destruction.

What occured in act 1 scene 2

In scene 2 of act 1 Madame Pernelle decides to leave and Cléante(Orgon’s brother-in-law who tries to get everyone to view things with calm and reason) refuses to walk her out towards the door because he has heard more than enough of her foolish childness. He cannot understand how Tartuffe has so totally deceived her, but then Dorine (Mariane’s maid who functions as a cunning manipulator and commentator on the actions of the play) points out that her master, Orgon, is even more absurdly deceived. It is safe to say that someone would actually have to see for himself in order to believe what great foolishness Orgon has fallen into. She sadly explains the many ways in which Tartuffe has already fooled Orgon and the many tedious sermons that they all have to listen to constantly. Elmire (Orgon’s second wife who represents a reasonable attitude toward life)  returns and hurridly tells Cléante that because of the fast that her husband is coming, she feels the need of a rest before seeing him again. Damis requests that Cléante question Orgon about Mariane’s, Orgon’s daughter who is in love with Valère and who is being forced to marry Tartuffe, wedding because if Mariane is not allowed to marry Valère, Damis would not be received as a suitor for Valère’s sister and that could cause major controversy!
